Easter Observations

Happy Good Friday, I have been thinking a lot about the difference between Easter in America and England. I have adapted well to the American ways, I have my Easter baskets packed and ready, my plastic eggs filled waiting for the joy of the egg hunt and my eggs ready to be decorated and dyed. I am on it. However, things are done very differently in England.

Firstly, everyone gets Friday and Monday off, it is called the Easter Long Weekend. A wonderful four day break, just heavenly.

Secondly we don't do Easter baskets, we give these instead............

Large chocolate Easter eggs. Usually there is an egg and some chocolate bars.

If a chocolate exists, there is no doubt that they will have an Easter version......

Up until a few years ago they used to put the bits inside the egg in a plastic bag. Then it all changed and now the chocolate is placed directly in the egg, something I was most excited about. There is nothing better than opening your egg to find it full of chocolate, (rather than a small plastic bag filled with the choc). If you have been to Target you might have seen Cadburys Chocolate eggs filled with mini eggs, that is what we do best. Although I must say I was slightly disappointed to only find 4 mini eggs inside - come on Cadburys!!

Some people do egg hunts but it is not as huge as it is over here. My Dad always did and egg hunt for us but we didn't have all those plastic eggs to hide them in. They were usually just hidden in their little egg wrappers.

One of my favourite things about Easter is Hot Cross Buns, love them. They are sort of a tea cake, a sweet bun filled with raisins and peel. You usually cut them in half, pop them in the toaster, spread some butter on them and have them with a cup of tea. BLISS. I am pleased to say that Whole Foods has them at the moment, love that.

Lastly, Easter Sunday Lunch, it is usual to have a Roast Lamb with all the trimmings. Delicious!!

The beauty of living somewhere else, is that you can cherry pick the best bits of both cultures. Meaning that you can have the most outrageous Easter ever, I love a good celebration. I hope you all have a wonderful Easter and a fab weekend.

  1. I know what you mean about not getting the long weekend. It amazes me that there isn't a holiday here - even Good Friday. We received our Marks & Spencers Easter chocs from mum yesterday. Yes there truly is a god! Regarding the hot cross buns - YIPPEE - looks as if we'll be off to Wholefoods then.... thanks for the tip off. Happy official chocolate eating season... xxx
